Kota Doria looks delicate, but a plain cotton saree is easier to look after than most people expect. The rule is simple: be gentle, be cold, and keep it out of harsh sun.
Before you start
Check what your saree is made of. Pure cotton pieces can be hand-washed. Anything with silk, zari or Gota Patti work should go to the dry cleaner instead.
The routine
- Fill a basin with cold water and a little mild detergent.
- Press the saree under the water. Do not scrub or wring it.
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Press out the water between your palms and dry it flat or hung in shade.
Storing it
Fold it loosely and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Refold along a different line every few months so the creases do not set into the weave.
